World Food Day Observed
LASOONA: Society for Human & Natural Resource Development along with its partner organization Welthugerhilfe organized an event in a local hotel in connection with World Food Day. The Purpose of the event was to increase public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty
A large number of participants attended the event, which includes, District Nazim Swat, representatives of social welfare, agriculture, livestock, Education, Health, district disaster management unit, forest departments of Swat Shangla and Kohistan districts, representatives of CSOs across the country, LASOONA and WHH staff, and print and electronic media.
Mr. Azam Khan-Executive Director LASOONA explained objectives of the event. He emphasized that we have to raise food production up to 60% by 2050 where integrated efforts will be required to feed additional 2 billion people keeping in view the rapid population growth of the world and particularly of Pakistan. He also stressed upon the need to take actions against the malnutrition prevailing in the country. He said that malnutrition is the root cause of various diseases especially in children under five.
A detail presentation was given to the participants by Mr. Noor Malik-Program Manager LASOONA that contained facts and figure related to food security globally, at Pakistan level and contributions of LASOONA/Welthungerhilfe in tackling with food and nutrition security problems. Besides, beneficiaries of the food security interventions presented their success stories. Several participants representing various organizations expressed their views on the occasion and highlighted the importance of the need for securing the world food.
A gallery walk of stalls was organized at the closing of the event where a number of government and non-government organizations showcased their contributions in ensuring food security. All the participants visited the stalls and took keen interest in interventions of their choices.
The District Nazim Swat who was chief guest of the event while addressing highlighted the challenges and opportunities related to food security. He appreciated LASOONA and WHH for organizing the event and pledge that he will utilize the learning of this event while developing the district development plan of Swat.
